Debunking The Myth: Not All Rubber Resists Oil Erosion

Many people mistakenly believe "all rubber is oil-resistant," but this is a critical misunderstanding of material properties:

Natural Rubber (NR) & Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR): They turn soft and floppy instantly when exposed to mineral oil or hydraulic oil, with a swelling rate of over 30%. They lose elasticity within days and can be called "oil-resistant duds."

Silicone Rubber (VMQ): It performs well in high and low temperatures but gives in immediately to fuel oil and lubricating oil. Prone to cracking and leakage, it can only be used in oil-free scenarios.

Chloroprene Rubber (CR): Its oil resistance is barely passable, yet it cannot withstand high temperatures or strong polar oils. It fails quickly when working conditions become slightly complex.

In contrast, Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) and Fluoroelastomer (FKM) have become the "top choices" for oil-resistant applications. The core lies in their molecular structures that are inherently compatible with oil media: the former locks in oil resistance through "acrylonitrile groups," while the latter builds a corrosion-resistant barrier with "fluorocarbon bonds." These structures fundamentally solve the problems of swelling, dissolution, and aging of rubber caused by oil media.
